Sacred "Hearts for Haiti" Contest

Written by Anne-Christine Jagneaux

In January of 2010, the poorest country in our Western Hemisphere was struck by a mighty earthquake.  Haiti, with such feeble infrastructure already, was devastated.  Over 200,000 people lost their lives; 300,000 were injured; and over a million were left homeless.  The people of the US opened their hearts and pocketbooks and sent immediate assistance to help.  Tent cities were erected, food and medicine arrived and Haitians struggled to survive.

Then Hurricane Tomas arrived in the fall, setting off a cholera epidemic which further battered the ravaged country.

Out of prayer for God’s aid to these people, the idea for “Hearts for Haiti” was born.  Last year, several Catholic schools from our diocese participated in separate fundraisers for Haiti.  The goal was to raise money to build homes and farms in the Kobonal Mission area, about 70 miles outside of Port-Au-Prince.  Father Glen Meaux, a native of Abbeville, has worked with the native Haitians in the Kobonal mission and has built a Catholic school and community.

With the help of Cross International Catholic Outreach, for about $5,500, a homeless family can become owners of a hurricane- and earthquake-resistant home, own ½ acre of land and the children of the family are able to attend the school free. The family is taught farming skills and subsidized for approximately three years while learning to provide for themselves. The parents also learn trades by which they can continue to support themselves and their community. All families who receive aid are expected to fully participate in the Catholic life of the community.

This year, during the month of February, Sacred Heart School will participate in “Hearts for Haiti.”

At the Elementary: Each homeroom will be able to drop off change and/or dollar bills in a container. The homeroom that collects the most money will be able to wear fingernail polish and/or cap. The second-place homeroom will be able to wear non-uniform shoes and the third place homeroom will be able to spend the school day with their shirts untucked.

At the High School: Each class (Senior, Junior, etc.) will also be encouraged to bring change and/or bills; the containers will be placed in the front office. The class that brings the most money will be able to wear fingernail polish, hats, out-of-dress code socks and untucked shirts. The second-place class will be able to wear their shirts untucked.

In addition, on Tuesday, February 14th (Valentine’s Day) the High School (not Elementary) students will be able to wear a red t-shirt for a $2 donation. The t-shirt must not contain inappropriate writing (no vulgarity, no innuendo, etc.).

How amazing would it be if all of our students and parents could unite together and bring forth such a long-reaching change for the good of our Haitian brothers and sisters? Please prayerfully consider this invitation and encourage your children to participate.

100% of all contributions are received by Cross Internationl Catholic Outreach; Catholic Outreach is a TAX-EXEMPT 501(c)(3) organization.
